How to Find a Mentor That Works For You

Step 1

Know what a mentor looks like – and find multiple!
Find a woman in your field that understands your role and appreciates what you bring to it. Ensure that they can help show you how to plan for your future and think strategically about the next steps of your career.

Step 2

Build out your roster of champions.
Think about the people in your professional life who may not be close colleagues, but have encouraged you along the way and have shown an interest in your talents. The more champions the better!

Step 3

Always be “building your dream job.”
Keep a list of what you like and don’t like about your current and previous jobs. Also make a highlights reel of projects and cost-savings you’ve been a part of. These tools will help you figure out where to go next with your career, build clarity, and have resources to refer to during an interview.

We love best-selling leadership authors and business scholars Kouzes’ and Posner’s essential strategic playbook for effective leadership, in which they frame leadership as both a skill to be learned and as a relationship to be nurtured.
